Students from the Faculty of Law of the University of Macau won the 2nd Place in the Best Team Award for their outstanding performance in the 10th Asia-Pacific M&A Model Competition. Among them, student Lin Kaijun won the Best Team Member Award and the Best Performance Award and was awarded the qualification of Junior M&A Dealer by the China Mergers and Acquisitions Association (CMAA).

16 teams participated in the competition including Peking University, Tsinghua University, National Taiwan University and University of Macau. This year’s competition was conducted online, and the teams showcased the fruitful results from cooperation plans, finance and legal feasibility analysis to taxation.  Wei Lidong, president of the CMAA, said that the competition provides opportunities for future M&A elites and experts to discuss, demonstrate and learn through communications, and will have a positive and far-reaching impact on promoting talent training and promoting the healthy development of the industry.

UM’s team consisted of students from the Faculty of Law namely PhD student Evangelina Ao as captain, Master students Yang Suijia, Li Yanrong, Lin Kaijun and Undergraduates Ho Im Mei and Chan Leong Seng, and the team was supervised by Dr. Leong Cheng Hang, Senior Instructor of the Faculty of Law.  Evangelina Ao said that the award was achieved with the support of UM, Dr. Tong Io Cheng, Dean of the Faculty of Law and Dr. Leong Cheng Hang, Senior Instructor, who provided comprehensive knowledge of M&A law in an academic perspective, including tax law, corporate law and securities law between the three places across the Strait, as well as corporate financial analysis, corporate M&A strategies and negotiation skills.

Li Yanrong said that during the competition, she participated in a mock due diligence process, negotiation and Board of Directors reporting sessions, and learned more about the practical issues faced in the competition, such as financial statements and the application of Valuation Adjustment Mechanism Agreements in corporate M&A, which deepened her understanding of the knowledge and experience for the industry. Ho Im Mei participated with the intention to learn and in working together, the team finally achieved satisfactory results. During the competition, she not only learned the relevant theoretical knowledge about M&A, but also deeply realized the difficulties faced in reality, which became an unforgettable experience in her academic career. Chan Leong Seng thus believes that this competition has made him realize the importance of M&A in the business world and how the law works in the process, and the experience of being able to conduct mock consultations with teams from other schools, in order to achieve a win-win result, is an extremely rare experience.

The Asia-Pacific M&A Model Competition is an annual event for academics and industry in the Asia-Pacific region, aiming to establish an exchange platform between teachers and students of cross-strait, Hong Kong and Macao regions and overseas institutions of higher education, to promote communications between the business community and academia, and is a regional and inter-professional platform that provides students with opportunities to consult and discuss with seniors and experts in the field of M&A, and cultivates future M&A talents in the Asia-Pacific region and globally through the competition. This year’s competition is sponsored by the Faculty of Law of Macau University of Science and Technology and the CMAA, and co-organized by the Faculty of Law of National Chengchi University in Taiwan.
