From December 13th to 14th, 2025, the Third Member Congress and 2025 Academic Annual Conference of the China Law Society’s World Trade Organization Law Research Association were successfully held in Kunming, Yunnan Province. Hosted by the School of Law of Yunnan University, the annual conference, themed “High-Level Institutional Opening-up and WTO Reform,” attracted over 400 experts, scholars, and university faculty and students to exchange views on cutting-edge topics such as China’s institutional opening-up and the practice of free trade zones, and the reform of WTO core mechanisms. Wang Hongxiang, Secretary of the Party Group and Executive Vice President of the China Law Society, attended the conference and delivered a speech. Zhang Xiangchen, Deputy Director-General of the World Trade Organization, and Zhang Taiyuan, President of the Yunnan Provincial Law Society, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. Li Yongjie, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Permanent Mission of China to the World Trade Organization, delivered a video address. Yi Xiaozhun, former Deputy Director-General of the World Trade Organization, attended the opening ceremony.
Research Assistant Professor Su Xueji, PhD student Li Hao, and PhD student Jiang Yue from the University of Macau actively participated in the conference and achieved results. In the leadership transition, Professor Su Xueji was elected as a new council member of the China Law Society’s World Trade Organization Law Research Association. In her academic presentations, Professor Su Xueji delivered a speech entitled “The Unsettled Governance of the Dual-Use Items under Article XXI(b)(ii) GATT: A New Battleground for WTO Security Exceptions” in Seminar Five, and subsequently gave a presentation at the concluding session. Comparative Law PhD Student Li Hao spoke in Seminar Eight on “WTO ‘Digital-Green’ Trade Rule Reform and China’s Response—Using Institutional Opening-up as a Path” (based on a paper co-authored with Jiang Yue). His presentation explored the possibility of using China’s free trade zone experience to promote the reform of WTO related rule, and emphasized the “integration of digital and green trade rules” and fairness reform. At this annual conference, the faculty and students of the the University of Macau’s Faculty of Law demonstrated outstanding performance in the election of the association, academic speeches, and presentation of research results, fully showcasing the Faculty’s influence in the fields of WTO law and international economic law.
