Research Area/Interests

My area of research area is to explore how Macao’s economic diversification can be deepened
through a legal mechanism such as adopting Macao as a seat and venue for Sino-Luso arbitration
disputes.
Macau’s economy has been heavily reliant on the tourism and casino industries for more than a
decade, the prevalence of gambling has limited Macao’s capacity to develop in other industries.
The outbreak of Covid-19 and the global economic downturn in recent years has severely
impacted the economy of the city, Macao is therefore facing an unprecedented and urgent need
to diversify its economy.
The Central government of China and other member states of the Forum Macau has shown
significant and continuous support for Macao to be an arbitration seat for commercial disputes
between China and Portuguese-Speaking Countries since the third Ministerial Level Conference,
which took place in 2010. Nevertheless, now that years have passed and Macao is still not capable
of fulfilling this role.
In light of this, as furtherance of my Master’s study, I intend to conduct in-depth research on
successful legal transformations in other jurisdictions, in order to find a practical solution for
Macau upon its urgent need for economic diversification through a legal mechanism.
