João Ilhão MOREIRA

Associate Director of the Centre for Studies on Jurisprudence and Legislation of China and Portuguese-Speaking Countries
Professor Moreira is an Assistant Professor of Civil Procedure Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Macau. His research and scholarly expertise focus on all areas of dispute resolution, with a particular emphasis on the interplay between socio-legal studies and alternative dispute resolution, especially arbitration. His research and teaching also address various topics in Macau law, particularly those related to commercial disputes. He has served as a legal expert in international and domestic proceedings and has acted as a consultant on legal projects.
Before joining the University of Macau faculty in 2019, Professor Moreira lectured at the Faculty of Law, University of Coimbra, and the Faculty of Law, University of Oxford. He has also been a visiting scholar at several institutions, including the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law, University of Cambridge, the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law, the Faculty of Law, University of Hong Kong, the Faculty of Law, University of Seville, and the Chinese University of Political Science and Law. Before beginning his academic career, Professor Moreira worked as a lawyer for six years at a Tier 1 Portuguese law firm specializing in dispute resolution and international arbitration.
Professor Moreira holds a D.Phil (2020) and an MSt (2016) from the University of Oxford, as well as an MSt (2010) and an LLB (2008) from the University of Coimbra.
