João Ilhão MOREIRA

Associate Director of the Centre for Studies on Jurisprudence and Legislation of China and Portuguese-Speaking Countries

Professor Moreira is an Assistant Professor of Civil Procedure Law at the Faculty of Law of University of Macau. Professor Moreira’s research and scholarly expertise center on all areas of dispute resolution, with a particular focus on the interplay between socio-legal studies and alternative dispute resolution, particularly, arbitration. He frequently speaks at conferences around the world on topics related to his areas of research interest.

Prior to joining the faculty of the University of Macau in 2019, Professor Moreira lectured at the Faculty of Law of University of Coimbra and the Faculty of Law of University of Oxford. He was also a visiting scholar at, amongst other institutions, the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law, the Faculty of Law of University of Hong Kong, the Faculty of Law of University of Seville and the Chinese University of Political Science and Law.

Prior to beginning his academic career, Professor Moreira worked as a lawyer for 6 years at a Portuguese Tier 1 law firm, specializing in dispute resolution and international arbitration.

Professor Moreira was educated at the University of Oxford (D. Phil, 2020 and MSt, 2016), and at the University of Coimbra (MSt, 2010 and LLB, 2008).
